Ylang Ylang is a large tree native to Far Eastern countries such as Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. Its yellow flowers are strongly fragrant and have long, drooping petals. The essential oil obtained from it is abundant and therefore the least expensive, but is highly valued for its fragrance in the perfume and cosmetics industry, and is now also used in the food industry.
According to science, ylang ylang essential oil is a mental stimulant. In the world of aromatherapy, on the other hand, this oil is considered one of the best means of relaxation of body and mind. Its smell alone is said to help lower blood pressure. Bathing with the oil or using it in a massage oil naturally enhances the relaxation experience. It is used to relieve stress, depression, shock or anxiety.
Used as a hair tonic, it is said to balance oil production. Be warned, however, that high concentrations of ylang ylang can cause headaches or nausea. Ylang Ylang means “flower of flowers” in Malay and was traditionally considered an aphrodisiac and relaxing scent, which is why the flowers of this tree were sprinkled on the marriage bed of a newly married couple in Indonesia.
Muslim women burned this oil to perfume their harems, the part of the palace reserved for women. In China, the fragrance was used to cleanse the robes of the tangerine. Ylang-ylang essential oil has long been associated with perfume and relaxation.
