Latin name : Thymus Mastichina

Extraction method : Steam distillation
Thyme essential oil, also known as Spanish wild marjoram, is obtained by steam distillation of the Thymus mastichina plant. This plant, which is actually a wild thyme, is characterized by a hairy stem, oval leaves and small whitish flowers in clusters. The whole plant exudes a strong aroma and belongs to the Lamiaceae family in Spain. It is not identical to sweet or French marjoram, nor is it identical to oregano, which is also called wild marjoram.
This oil is considered more effective than that of sweet marjoram, especially as an expectorant for respiratory infections and spasms, as it has antiseptic properties for the upper respiratory tract. However, it is neither a muscle relaxant nor a sedative, as is the case with sweet marjoram. Widely used in aromatherapy, Spanish marjoram oil harmonizes especially well with lavender and bergamot oils to create a relaxing environment. When used in an oil burner or as a massage oil, this herb is said to calm the nerves and help against loneliness and rejection. It also supports digestion.
Spanish wild marjoram has been known to herbalists since ancient Greece. The ancient Greeks and Romans crowned bridal couples with wreaths of marjoram to symbolize love, honor and happiness. Singers used majorante tea with honey to preserve their voices.
