Organic lemon essential oil has a sharp, fresh scent and is extracted by cold pressing from the fresh lemon fruit peel. This oil has a refreshing effect on the mind and promotes concentration, which is why it is often used in room fresheners for offices and banks. It is believed to help with rheumatism, arthritis and gout.
It has been used to cure skin problems such as abscesses, boils, carbuncles and acne. In an oil burner (a few drops in water) the vapors of lemon oil are used for colds, laryngitis, headaches and flu. The fragrance is helpful for mental problems such as depression, irritability, stress, lethargy and fatigue.
It lifts the mood and clears the head. A few drops in the bath or mixed in a massage oil are said to relieve digestive problems, lack of energy, fatigue, infections, obesity, rheumatism, depression and stress. It is also used to get rid of hangovers.
The lemon plant originated in India and possibly China and was brought to Europe by the Crusaders in the Middle Ages. Because the fruit is high in vitamins A, B and C, sailors were given an ounce a day to prevent scurvy, eye problems and other vitamin deficiencies.
The first real cultivation of lemons in Europe began in Genoa in the mid-fifteenth century. It was later introduced to America by Christopher Columbus. The Spanish conquests contributed to the further spread of lemon seeds. The lemon was used mainly as an ornamental plant and as a medicine. Only much later began to use them in the kitchen.
