Lemon essential oil exudes an intense, fresh scent and is obtained by a careful cold pressing directly from the peel of fresh lemons. It is a real pick-me-up for the mind, increases concentration and is often used in room fresheners to create an invigorating and clear atmosphere – ideal for offices and work environments. The oil is also said to provide relief from rheumatic complaints, arthritis and gout, and has healing properties for a wide variety of skin problems such as abscesses and acne.
Used in an oil burner, the vapor of lemon oil helps clear the respiratory tract during colds or flu and can relieve headaches and sore throats. At the same time, the fragrance has a positive effect on the psyche, drives away depressive thoughts, irritability and fatigue and brings fresh energy. It is said that lemon oil lifts the mood and helps to clear the head.
A small amount in bath water or mixed in a massage oil can help relieve digestive problems, provide energy, and be supportive for stress and depression. In addition, it is used in folk medicine to get rid of hangovers after a night of partying. The lemon itself has a long history: originating in India and perhaps China, it was brought to Europe by the Crusaders in the Middle Ages and later introduced to the Americas by Christopher Columbus.
Even then, it was known that the high content of vitamins A, B and C in the lemon was essential for seamen to prevent scurvy and other deficiency symptoms. However, the actual cultivation of lemons in Europe began only in the fifteenth century in Genoa. For a long time, the lemon was valued mainly as a medicine and ornamental plant, before it found its permanent place in the culinary world.
